Towards Sustainable Innovation in Flanders' Blue Bioeconomy

The GAME intercluster project addresses bottlenecks in the cultivation and valorisation of the red seaweed Porphyra in the Northeast Atlantic area. Drawing inspiration from the European Union's Green Deal, Farm to Fork, and the EU4Algae initiative, this pioneering venture recognises the untapped potential of Porphyra, which awaits discovery.

Outlook

With the compass set towards a sustainable bioeconomy, the GAME project embarks on a journey across three strategic pillars:

  1. Cultivating Excellence:

Venturing into the aquaculture sector, our journey begins with the selection and cultivation of Porphyra species from the North Sea. Leveraging their remarkable genetic and biochemical diversity, we strive to address the knowledge gaps in their complex life cycle.

Our aim is to combine life cycle experiments with state-of-the-art genomics tools for adequate strain selection. Furthermore, the biochemical composition of Porphyra is influenced by environmental factors.

GAME aims to enhance our understanding of the roles of these factors to develop cultivation protocols designed to ensure stable, year-round availability of local Porphyra biomass, tailored to various applications within the Blue Bioeconomy.

  2. Refining Red Gold:

In the biorefinery sector, our quest continues as we delve into post-harvest treatments and green chemistry extraction techniques. This pivotal step promises not only the sustainable recovery of bioactive compounds but also the illumination of new pathways for applications.

The final leg of our journey leads us to the nutraceutical and agrochemical sector, where we explore the profound impact of these compounds, unlocking the secrets of their benefits and paving the way for groundbreaking applications.

  3. Navigating Through Partnership Seas:

As we sail through these ambitious waters, our vessel is steered by the expertise and vision of the Strategic Advisory Board (SAB), a dynamic group of industry leaders and innovators.

Together, with the business development team we chart a course through the complexities of intellectual property and strategic collaborations, ensuring that our discoveries reach the shores of commercialization and beyond.
