At the very first edition of Waves of Change, inspiring speakers shared their insights and experiences on the role of women in the maritime sector. Among those who took the stage were:

  • Nathalie Balcaen (Administrator-General at MDK);
  • Wendy Goossens (COO at Otary RS);
  • Leen De Bolle (Flemish Diversity Officer);
  • Céline Mortier (CEO at BOGERD MARTIN)
  • Fiona Chun Li Ang (Educational Coordinator at De Aanstokerij);
  • Catrien Scheers (Chair at Fast Lines Belgium); and
  • Piet Opstaele (CEO at Blue Cluster).

During personal testimonies and a panel discussion, a number of powerful messages emerged:

  • Together we make a difference: diversity is an asset that makes teams stronger, more innovative, and more sustainable. As Wendy Goossens aptly said: “Diversity = the wind in the sails.”
  • Diversity requires maintenance: it demands sustained effort and a conscious approach to create real impact.
  • Inclusion starts with choices and opportunities: using the right language is crucial, otherwise it’s easy to fall back on stereotypes.
  • Education is key: parents play a positive, encouraging role, and it is important that maritime schools are locally accessible so that young people can discover the sector early.
  • Role models are essential: they inspire young people and show what is possible.
  • Believe in yourself: stay true to your talents and dare to be visible.

These insights emphasize that creating an inclusive and diverse maritime sector is not just a matter of numbers—it is a deliberate process that begins with education, culture, and everyday choices.

New toolbox for diversity and inclusion

One of the highlights of the day was the launch of the Diversity & Inclusion Toolbox. This practical guide provides organizations with concrete tools to create more inclusive workplaces and to fully unlock the potential of all talent.

Urgent need for more women

The figures clearly show there is still work to do. Globally, the maritime sector remains one of the industries with the lowest female representation, both at operational and policy levels. According to the International Maritime Organisation, the relative share of women in the sector declined from 26% in 2021 to 19% in 2024. Among seafarers, only 1% are women.

To change this, it is crucial that young people are introduced early to the opportunities in the maritime sector. In addition, job postings should be formulated in a way that appeals to women and shared more widely and strategically. Finally, employers themselves can actively contribute to an inclusive workplace where diverse talent feels welcome and can thrive.

Lighthouse Award for Project Olivia

Waves of Change also aims to recognize and celebrate inspiring initiatives. Each year, the Lighthouse Award will shine a spotlight on a person, organization, team, or project that sets an example for others.

The first award went to Project Olivia, an initiative by the Flemish government designed to inspire young girls and encourage them to dream of a future on and around the water. Karima El Hachimi and Caroline Breemersch accepted the award on behalf of the “Olivias,” the faces of the project.

Towards an inclusive future

The first edition of Waves of Change made one thing clear: change is both needed and possible. By embracing diversity and inclusion, the maritime sector can attract more talent while becoming stronger and more innovative. As one of the speakers summed it up: “The sea is constantly changing – and so are we.”

Thank you and see you next time

MDK and De Blauwe Cluster wish to thank all speakers, participants, and partners for their contributions to this inspiring first edition of Waves of Change. Together, we have taken an important step towards a more inclusive maritime sector.

We look forward to continuing this conversation at the second edition of Waves of Change. Do you want to be part of this movement? Keep an eye on our channels and join us in shaping the waves of tomorrow. 🌊
