UN Ocean Decade kicks off
The ocean is already a very important factor in terms of food supply, climate regulation and oxygen production. However, the world’s population continues to grow and onshore opportunities are just about reached. The ocean is increasingly considered for the future.
However, an increase in offshore activities may not cause ocean ecosystems to deteriorate. The focus should therefore be on the sustainable use of oceans, seas and maritime resources. This way, the fragile natural environment can be better preserved.

Scientific research can contribute to the sustainable use of maritime resources. Thorough knowledge about the ocean is also crucial to better arm ourselves against climate change and mitigate its impact.
The Ocean Decade is the perfect opportunity to promote ocean science as a tool for sustainable development and to come up with innovative solutions for a healthier, more resilient and sustainable ocean.
The UN therefore aims to mobilise more people and resources over the next 10 year to further streamline and boost ocean research.
