Blue Cluster’s scope includes all sustainable economic activities, at, on and in the sea. We therefore feel strongly about leading the Oceans section at G-STIC. This time, the programme included a deep dive and the Blue Innovation Awards ceremony.

This year, G-STIC takes place in Dubai as part of the 2020 World’s Fair. The programme is divided in two parts. The first part takes place from 24 to 27 October 2021, the second part from 17 to 19 January 2022. We organised two activities in Dubai during the first part:

Artificial islands and sustainable blue growth (Sunday 24 October)

After an opening speech by Minister-President of Flanders Jan Jambon, Marijn Rabaut (Blue Cluster), Alexander D’Hooghe (ORG Permanent Modernity), Marcus Haward (University of Tasmania), Catalina Spataru (University College London), Zinzi Reimert (North Sea Farmers) and Peter Thomson (UN Special Envoy for the Ocean) elaborated on the role artificial islands can play in the blue economy.

The Blue Innovation Awards (Monday 25 October)

Inspiring projects in the blue economy were put in the spotlight during the second edition of the Blue Innovation Awards. The winners were: Leveraging AI for carbon-neutral shipping (Toqua); MANTA-line (Bexco); MPVAqua (Tractebel, Jan De Nul, DEME, Soltech and Ghent University); Port of Antwerp: The Echodrone & more (Port of Antwerp) and A triple helix approach for innovation in the Belgian Navy (Belgian Navy).

The Blue Innovation Party Antwerp (Monday 25 October)

In addition to the activities in Dubai, we also organised a parallel event in Antwerp. The programme included some interesting speeches and everyone could watch the awards ceremony live. Various culinary delights were served during this event.

G-STIC (Global Sustainable Technology & Innovation Community) annually organises a series of international conferences on technological innovations that can help achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. This series of conferences was organised for the fifth time in 2021.
