While industrial aerospace activities used to be primarily aimed at building infrastructure (satellites, launching systems and ground stations), nowadays they are increasingly targeting the end-user, who can use the technology in a wide range of areas by means of terminals and software. In addition to scientific research, an aerospace economy has also developed:

  • Satellite communication (telecommunication, television, Internet)
  • Satellite navigation (positioning and timing)
  • Earth observation, including data processing and the development of derived products and services.

New maritime applications?

Flanders Space unites all Flemish companies, knowledge institutions and incubation centres active the in the aerospace industry. Together with the members of Blue Cluster, Flanders Space intends to develop new applications with proven added value in the maritime sector. Flanders is ideally positioned for this thanks to its seaports, its cities and its extensive logistical network.

Blue Cluster and Flanders Space are planning a matchmaking event allowing the members of both clusters to get to know each other better and become familiar with each other’s activities. The event is aimed at identifying potential options for cooperation in the long run. Wish to attend this event? Send us an e-mail and we will keep you posted.

Existing maritime applications

The following systems have already been adopted in shipping and rely, in whole or in part, on aerospace communication or positioning:

  1. AIS: Automatic Identification of Ships
  2. VDES: VHF Data Exchange System
  3. Inmarsat L-band telephony and Internet
  4. GMDSS Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (Inmarsat-C) (IMO)
  5. SSAS, Ship Security Alert System (IMO) via Cospas - Sarsat Search and Rescue (SAR)
  6. Iridium satellite phone network (e.g. in Arctic areas)

Importance of the Flemish aerospace sector

With a turnover of € 350 million and 1,400 highly qualified technicians, engineers and scientists, the aerospace sector is a driving force for innovation in Flanders. Flemish aerospace technology contributes to economic growth, enhances competitiveness and creates new jobs.

With their technology and expertise, Flemish aerospace actors play a crucial role in addressing major societal challenges, such as climate change and secure communication.

Flanders Space is the principal point of contact for the Flemish aerospace sector and currently has 42 members.
