CO-WATERS launches coalition for healthier oceans and waters
In early March, the new Coalition of cities, regions, islands and ports was launched. The coalition is part of the European CO-WATERS project and supports local authorities in implementing the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030”.
The launch took place during the European Ocean Days in Brussels, where policymakers and local actors gathered to discuss the next phase of the Mission: moving from plans to concrete implementation.
What does the coalition do?
The coalition brings together cities, regions, islands and ports working towards healthier seas and waters. Its goal is to accelerate and scale up local initiatives. Participants gain access to a range of practical support services:
- exchange of knowledge and experiences with other regions;
- training, mentoring and guidance for transition plans;
- tools to better engage stakeholders;
- advice on funding and investment;
- recognition through a label that highlights their efforts.
The focus is on concrete implementation. This is not a network on paper, but a collaboration that leads to tangible results on the ground.
From ambition to impact
According to the European Commission, the Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030” is now moving into a phase of large-scale deployment. Local authorities are seen as key actors in this process.
Many challenges, such as improving water quality or restoring ecosystems, require long-term collaboration. The coalition aims to strengthen this cooperation and ensure that successful solutions are scaled up more quickly.
