MFiland (Multifunctional Island)

In Belgium, man-made islands are considered an element for coastal protection against the rise in sea levels. Making these coastal protection islands multifunctional could make a significant contribution to their financial affordability.

Type
DBC project

This project aims to assess the techno-economic feasibility of a multi-use island. Various functions (including energy production and storage; aquaculture; desalination; coastal protection; ecosystem services, etc.) that can provide potential services and additional value will be investigated.

The synergies between the various functions and services will also be investigated. In addition, modelling will provide a first insight into the optimal configuration of the various functions, based on the combination of economic, spatial and ecological optima.

The study is an important step towards the realisation of innovative maritime structures. The tangible end product of the study is a concrete business plan. In case of a positive evaluation, this project will be the starting point for the development of a multifunctional island in the North Sea.
