In winter, a lot of sand is lost on the beach and in the dunes, including during heavy storms. To ensure the safety of our coast, this shortage should be replenished regularly. The traditionally used method for this is beach nourishments (beach replenishments).

Sustainable approach

Jan De Nul Group is using 100% sustainable biofuel for the dredging works. This results in much lower CO2 emissions and a considerable reduction in the amount of particulate matter released into the atmosphere. Moreover, this biofuel is made from plant waste stream oils.

For the earthworks on the beach, Jan De Nul uses very advanced bulldozers and excavators equipped with exhaust gas filter systems. Furthermore, ecological site offices equipped with excellent insulating materials and a heat pump are available for local employees.

Context

The works in Mariakerke are an initiative of the Agency Maritime Services & Coast and are part of a broad campaign on beach nourishments across the Flemish coast. Later this year, beach nourishments will also take place in the bay of Heist, and in the coastal municipalities of Bredene and Wenduine.
