The Flemish government, through VLAIO (Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship), is supporting eight innovation projects that respond to a rapidly changing security context. The funding is part of the Flemish Defence Plan and aligns with the Flemish Innovation and Industrial Strategy for Security and Defence (VISD).

The selected projects show how companies are further developing existing technologies for defence applications. This ‘dual-use’ approach, where technology can be applied in both civilian and defence contexts, is clearly gaining traction. In areas such as maritime technology, sensors and artificial intelligence, Flanders continues to build on its existing strengths.

This results in a wide range of applications. From systems that ensure radar accuracy to autonomous underwater robots that detect mines. The selection also includes smart sensor networks, training simulations and AI tools for detecting online threats.

The eight supported projects at a glance

  • MAHI is developing advanced maritime software and hardware for autonomous navigation
  • SENHIVE is building smart sensor networks that detect intruders and drones
  • SABCA Limburg produces and maintains composite components for aircraft and drones
  • TEXTGAIN develops AI software that detects online extremism and disinformation
  • SAKARI Games creates training games for realistic military scenarios
  • Intersoft Electronics develops systems for testing and calibrating radars
  • Exail Robotics Belgium builds autonomous underwater robots for mine detection
  • Star Forge Technologies develops ultra-strong metal parts via 3D printing for military applications

With this support, Flanders aims to accelerate innovation while creating economic opportunities. The projects are expected to lead to new applications, investments and export opportunities for Flemish companies.
