Discussion Forum on Ocean NETs (23 March 2023, 10:30 CET)
During the G-STIC Rio conference in February 2023, we discussed how Ocean Negative Emission Technologies could be an opportunity to achieve the ambition to limit global surface warming to 1.5–2°C compared to pre-industrial levels by 2100.
As climate actions such as sequestering carbon will be a key requirement for limiting global warming to well below 2°C, ocean-based climate technologies have the potential to contribute as upscaling is likely given the large ocean surface on Earth. Not only from a technical point of view, but also how to balance the risks to accelerate implementation of ocean NETs and which techniques are already offered by nature (“blue carbon”).
What is the best science-driven way forward given the current climate context? How can we accelerate use of Ocean NETs at a large scale without taking irresponsible risks? Many questions remain, but the time is now to discuss policy schemes, societal acceptance of certain risks and scientific debate on what is technically feasible today.
As such, we want to take this opportunity to create a discussion forum where knowledge can be exchanged, questions can be asked and as such the development of ocean NETs and the necessary policy framework can be accelerated. .
This forum is open to anyone who wants to contribute, whether with knowledge or with questions. Interested in joining? Please complete the form below and we will keep you posted
The provisional date for the discussion forum is Thursday 23 March at 10:30 AM (CET). More details will be provided in due time.
