BOPTIC

The partners in the BOPTIC project aim to develop and implement optical monitoring technologies for offshore power cables and foundations through Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing. This will contribute to smart cables and foundations of offshore wind farms.

Type
DBC project, National project

 The BOPTIC project aims to develop innovative monitoring solutions for the cables and foundations using optical fibre technologies in order to reduce the BOP OPEX costs for offshore wind. The techniques that are part of this project are distributed measuring techniques, i.e. “Distributed Acoustic Sensing, DAS” and “Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry, OFDR”.

The solutions include:

  • For cable monitoring: level of embedding, service life measurement/estimation of the XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene), freespan detection, cable tension, bending moments, fatigue measurements, partial discharge, impact of anchors or trawls;
  • For the foundation monitoring: seabed level/integrity monitoring, continuous monitoring of load moments and crack detection of welds.
