Oyster reef restoration gains momentum in the Belgian North Sea
Oysters are often described as ecosystem engineers. They create complex habitats for many other species, improve water quality and contribute to a more resilient ecosystem. Driven by these benefits, a range of initiatives are currently building knowledge on ecosystem restoration, upscaling and the integration of oyster reefs into the blue economy.
From pilot project to large-scale restoration
Restoring oyster reefs is one of the priorities within Belgium’s marine nature restoration policy. The Marine Environment Division of the Federal Public Service Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment is supporting concrete restoration projects in the historic oyster grounds around the Hinder Banks.
BELREEFS marked the first large-scale pilot project to test techniques for offshore restoration of flat oyster reefs. Young oysters were deployed on specially developed reef substrates in the Belgian North Sea. The knowledge gained through this project now forms the foundation for further upscaling.
The next step is being taken through EuroReefs. This initiative explores how ecosystem restoration can be carried out on a much larger scale. In 2026, a total of 1,800 biodegradable reef structures carrying more than one million young flat oysters were deployed in the gravel beds of the Hinder Banks. This marks the transition from pilot projects to the large-scale implementation of marine ecosystem restoration.
Reefcovery: integrating nature into offshore infrastructure
In addition to the active restoration of oyster reefs, research is also being carried out into how offshore infrastructure can support their return. Within Reefcovery, companies and research organisations are working together on solutions for the large-scale restoration of oyster reefs and their integration into offshore and coastal infrastructure.
The project investigates which materials are most suitable for oyster growth and how infrastructure can support nature development without compromising its technical function. It also develops techniques to restore oyster reefs on a larger scale.
One of the project's key innovations is the Reefcovery Inoculator. This mobile facility enables young oyster larvae to be attached to natural substrates under controlled conditions before being deployed offshore. In this way, Reefcovery provides practical knowledge and technology for future restoration projects.
Blue Connect: from innovation to implementation
Interest in restoring marine habitats is also growing at European level. The Horizon Europe project Blue Connect focuses on the protection, restoration and management of marine protected areas.
The Belgian demonstration site is located within the Flemish Banks marine protected area, where historic oyster beds around the Hinder Banks are being restored. Young oysters are settled on natural substrates which are subsequently deployed at sea.
Blue Connect builds on knowledge and technology developed in earlier projects. During the 2026 campaign, more than 2,000 stones carrying young oysters were prepared and deployed at the Belgian demonstration site. For this purpose, the consortium made use of the Reefcovery Inoculator, creating a direct link between innovations developed within Reefcovery and their application in a European ecosystem restoration project.
Alongside practical restoration activities, Blue Connect also focuses on monitoring, knowledge development and stakeholder involvement in the management of marine protected areas.
Building the future North Sea together
Although each project has its own focus, they all share a common ambition: a healthy North Sea rich in biodiversity. Together, they are building knowledge on ecosystem restoration, upscaling and the integration of oyster reefs into the blue economy.
