The European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) has earmarked € 5.7 billion for the management of fisheries, aquaculture and fishing fleets in the European Union for the period from 2021 to 2027. Within this scope, the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission has drawn up a new strategic vision for sustainable aquaculture production and consumption in the European Union.

The document describes the usefulness and importance of aquaculture, lists several important rules for aquaculture producers and gives an outline of the ambitions of the European Union in the field of aquaculture. It also refers to the strategic guidelines for a sustainable and competitive European aquaculture, which were published in early 2022.
